Position Summary:

Plans, develops and evaluates, tribal tourism policies, programs, procedures and special

activities to effectively meet the area’s tourism needs and goals by identifying local, tribal and regional tourism issues and needs, developing work plans and conducting or coordinating tribal tourism

analyses and other evaluations of program and project success. The position is responsible for enhancing LSIC’s economic development by promoting tourism through partnerships such as local Chamber of Commerce, local hospitality businesses, non-profits and the broader tribal community.

The Tribal Tourism Coordinator will manage, design and administer a tribal tourism plan for Lower Sioux Indian Community. The position will focus on conducting local community and stakeholder outreach, planning of community meeting, surveys and developing networking plan with other tourism

programs and organizations to maximize resources and effectively meet LSIC’s tourism

needs.  Performs intermediate administrative work planning and organizing tourism web site and social media initiatives, market sales, serving as liaison between LSIC and State tourism agencies. In addition, the Tribal Tourism Coordinator will focus, identify and achieve job duties that meet the goals of LSIC’s Preservation Plan, LSIC Cultural Protection Ordinance and the Cansayapi Cultural Department Action Plan.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Excellent research and writing skills are required
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and follow directions from CCD Director/THPO.
  • Must have knowledge of travel/tourism industry and resources sufficient to develop tribal tourism plans and data.
  • Requires an understanding of the occupational principles of marketing, program
  • administration and market data research.
  • Coordinate opportunities for collaboration and partnership with Explore Minnesota to market LSIC for in-state promotional campaigns.
  • Manage and design engaging content to be used on the LSIC website, and in print and digital formats that promote LSIC as a travel destination.
  • Research new and creative sales and marketing strategies on expanding and emerging market segments, including prospecting and researching opportunities.
  • Support and offer enhancement of current tribal tourism programs to make them more effective by increasing awareness and reach while avoiding duplication of programs (Parks, Public Safety, etc).
  • Oversee proactive outreach to new LSIC Government departments and their programs to assess how to connect them to tourism- stakeholder support
  • Identify and support the development of new tribal destinations in Minnesota River Valley: tribal opportunities that expand visitor experiences in and around LSIC.
  • Leverage data and research to identify opportunities and areas where the development of resources is needed to support tribal destination visibility.
  • Serve as in-house expert on assigned markets, utilizing research, trends, and current events to communicate progress to LSIC Council, LSIC Government staff and other relevant partners.
  • Experience with Xcel, Outlook and other database software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, and other materials, including information of a confidential nature.
  • Set up and maintain confidential and legal files and records; edit reports, site records, and create maps as needed using coordinates-as needed.
  • Willing to sign a confidentiality statement and follow all LSIC rules in the Employee Handbook.

REQUIREMENTS:

  4. At least 18 years of age
  5. 2-year post-secondary certificate in business management, marketing, economic development analysis or similar field.
  6. Must be committed to being Drug and Alcohol Free in the Workplace and during employment.
  7. Must be culturally sensitive and have a basic understanding of tribal cultural practices.
  8. Must have strong to excellent computer skills.
  9. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
  10. Must be able to follow detailed directions
  11. Must be able to work well under pressure and in stressful situations
  12. Must be able to work independently as well as with others in a variety of conditions.
