LOCATION:       Lower Sioux Indian Community International Incubator

HOURS:               Full Time, Monday- Friday; evening or weekend hours as required; some flexibility required

Wage:                   Dependent on qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Lower Sioux Indian Community’s Health Department is seeking an assistant cook to assist the Intergenerational Chef/Kitchen Manager in administering the Elder Nutrition Program. Further major duties will include preparing and ensuring quality nutritional meals are prepared and served from kitchen, maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary manner. The primary duty of the assistant cook is to assist the Chef in the day-to-day operations of the kitchen

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting the head chef in preparing menus
  • Assisting the head chef in food preparation activities, such as cleaning, cutting, chopping, and peeling food ingredients
  • Cleaning and maintenance of the cooking zone
  • Cleaning and maintenance of cooking equipment like pots, pans, refrigerator and ovens
  • Cleaning and sanitizing the food preparation areas based on company and industry hygiene codes and health and safety standards
  • Helps in training the kitchen support staff
  • Prepares cooking ingredients for use in the dishes
  • Be aware of safety regulations and implement them in the kitchen
  • Take over the responsibilities of the head chef in his absence

Education and Experience:

  • A high school diploma, or GED
  • Experience in kitchen operations, such as knife and cooking skills preferred
  • In-depth understanding of food health and safety regulations
  • Food handlers license preferred, however will provide training, and required certification completion within first week of hire date will be required.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Ability to take and understand orders implicitly.
  • Creativity and innovation in suggesting menus and recipes.
  • Clear communication skills.
  • Must be a team player and work in harmony with the other workers in the kitchen.
  • Must be physically strong to lift heavy pots and pans.
  • Understanding of Lower Sioux Cultural values, lifestyles, traditions.
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality are a must.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and a positive working relationship with community and staff.
  • Must comply with the Lower Sioux Indian Community drug and alcohol policy.
  • Interest in and commitment to American Indian/Alaska Native health.
  • Native Preference applies.

Physical Requirements:

  • This work requires the following physical abilities: climbing, bending, kneeling, twisting, reaching, standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, and relocating up to 40lbs.
