Position description: Under the direction of the CWOO Director, the Dakota Iapi Wauƞspewiċakiya Itaƞcaƞ will be an intermediate-mid level fluent ACTFL speaker of Dakota Iapi who will teach the staff, parents, and community. They will focus on immersion speaking support and cultural teachings to promote and sustain a Dakota language learning environment, and with it, the Dakota culture by helping raise Dakota language teachers, staff, and parents. The Dakota Iapi Wauƞspewiċakiya Itaƞcaƞ will oversee the creation of a Dakota learning environment to begin creating a Dakota dominant language environment. This position supervises CWOO’s Dakota Iapi Department.
Dakota Iapi Wauƞspewiċakiya Itaƞcaƞ Duties:
- Ensures that the center environment is welcoming to children, families, staff, and visitors;
- Speaks and role models Dakota language with all staff, families, and children to promote and sustain a Dakota language learning environment;
- Teaches Dakota language and teaching methodology through staff classes and by being in classrooms for immersion support and cultural teachings;
- Submits timely reports of the state of language and language activities to the Director;
- Speak language to continue growing immersion capacity; actively trying to stay in the language during conversations outside of the classroom and out of language learning times to create a Dakota dominant environment.
- Work with Cankuya Project Manager and Master Speaker in the development and implementation of the Dakota Language Teacher Cankuya Pathway Credential.
- Substitutes in classrooms, as needed, while Language Nest Apprentices are in classes;
- Creates materials based on lessons in classroom to support teachers with classroom language;
- Creates materials based on lessons in classrooms to bridge what is happening in classrooms to families;
- Support staff and families in language acquisition and production;
- Support children in language acquisition and production;
- Co-plan with CWOO Director and Dakota Iapi department quarterly cultural activities for children, families, and community;
- Continue language growth through Master Speaker teachings;
- Work with Dakota Iapi department and CWOO teachers to support Dakota language coaching cycle schedule to help build their teaching practices;
- Help translate curriculum and translation requests in Dakota to create resources and material for immersion school and community;
- Support staff with trainings in the Dakota language and culture;
- Helps plan parent language classes with Dakota Iapi department;
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge and Attributes
- Intermediate-mid level ACTFL fluent speaker in Dakota Language
- Experience teaching Dakota Language and culture
- Experience teaching educators in Dakota language and culture
- Excellent communication skills
