The Lower Sioux Indian Community Tribal Court invites applications from qualified individuals interested in a temporary summer law clerk position. Under the supervision of the Chief Tribal Court Judge, the summer law clerk position is generally responsible for providing requested legal research and writing in support of the Court’s operation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research issues of federal Indian and tribal law raised in pleadings.
  • Assist in drafting bench memoranda and judicial opinions, if requested.
  • Analyze tribal ordinances, regulations, and policies.
  • Assist in developing court forms and bench guides as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to facilitate Court operations.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Skill in conducting legal research and in legal writing.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a diverse workload.
  • Professional manner appropriate for a court setting.
  • Ability to maintain the confidential nature of court records.
  • Proficient oral and written communication, including Word and Adobe.

Education and Experience

Completion of at least two years of Juris Doctorate coursework (will consider completion of one year) at an institution accredited by the State of Minnesota or the American Bar Association. Demonstrated interest in federal Indian and tribal law preferred.

Additional Information

  • Term: summer 2024 with flexible start and end dates.
  • Compensation: $25.00 per hour.
  • Hours: Approximately 10 hours per week with flexible work hours.
  • Location: Remote, subject to change to some in-person attendance.
  • Indian preference: Native American preference will apply.
  • Vaccination: Must comply with Lower Sioux Indian Community COVID-19 and vaccination Policy.
