Daḳota Iapi Wauƞspewic̣akiya

Summary

Under the direction of the CWOO Director, this position with the Lower Sioux Dakota Language Teacher and the C̣aƞṡayapi Waḳaƞyeża Owayawa Oṭi staff, will be a proficient speaking teacher the staff, parents, and community will go to for language. They will focus on Immersion Speaking support and Cultural Teachings to promote and sustain a Dakota language learning environment and with it the Dakota culture by helping raise Dakota language teachers, staff, and parents.

Dakota Iapi Wauƞspewic̣akiya Duties

1. Ensures that the center environment is welcoming to children, families, staff, and visitors.
2. Speaks and role models Dakota language with all staff, families, and children to promote and sustain a Dakota language learning environment.
3. Teaches Dakota Language and Teaching Methodology through staff class and by being in classrooms for Immersion Support and Cultural Teachings
4. Creates materials based on lessons in classroom to support teachers on classroom language.
5. Creates materials based on lessons in classrooms to bridge what is happening in classrooms to Families.
6. Co-Lead with LSIC Dakota Language Teacher on planning and implementation of Language Assessments for Staff and Families (Adults) including Summative Assessment.
7. Track Staff Formative Assessments. (Conducted three times a year)
8. Track Families Formative Self- Assessments (Conducted three times a year)
9. Support Staff and Families in language acquisition and production.
10. Collaborate with Language team to Create, Plan and lead with Implementation of Child Assessment using Teaching Strategies Gold.
11. Compile Children Assessment Data.
12. Support Children in language acquisition and production.
13. Conduct Quarterly Cultural Activity for children, families, and Community
14. Continue language growth through Master Speaker teachings.
15. Works with LSIC Dakota Language Teacher and CWOO Teachers to support Dakota Language coaching cycle schedule to help build their teaching practices.
16. Help translate curriculum and translations request in Dakota to create resources and material for Immersion school and Community.
17. Support staff with trainings in the Dakota language and culture.
18. Help plan Parent language classes with Lower Sioux Dakota language teacher.
19. Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Knowledge and Attributes

• Fluency in Dakota Language
• Experience teaching Dakota Language and culture
• Experience teaching educators in Dakota language and culture
• Excellent communication skills
