POSITION: Community Health Personal Care Attendant Worker
DEPARTMENT: Lower Sioux Community Health Department
REPORTS TO: Lower Sioux Community Health Director
SALARY: $15 to $17/hour
STATUS: PT or FT: Monday through Sunday-varies as needed throughout the week, will vary depending on client needs
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Lower Sioux Indian Community’s Health Department is seeking Personal Care Assistants (PCA) to support Lower Sioux Community member elders in need of extra assistance in their homes. The PCA will provide health care tasks, personal hygiene services, housekeeping tasks and other related support services as outlined in a client’s Care Plan, developed by community health nurse, that are essential to the client’s health and safety needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist clients with personal hygiene, including shower, tub or bed baths, oral care, hair, and skin care.
- Assist clients in the use of toilet facilities, including bed pans
- Assist clients in and out of bed, excluding the use of mechanical lifting equipment unless
trained and documented as competent.
- Assist clients with walking, including the use of walkers and wheelchairs, when applicable.
- Assist clients with self-administration of medications.
- Meal preparation and feeding, when required.
- Record and report changes in the client’s physical condition, behavior or appearance to Community Health Nurse.
- Assist with prescribed exercises when the client and the PCA have been instructed by the
appropriate health professional.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED
- Experience in providing care and assistance to sick, disabled, elderly, or fragile individuals preferred
Skills & Qualifications:
- Must be at least age 18
- Minnesota Department of Human Services’ PCA and Community First Services and Supports Training and Certification (required within 60 days of employment)
- Must pass Lower Sioux Indian Community background check
- Have a sympathetic attitude toward the care of the sick and elderly
- PCAs must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license
- Understanding of Lower Sioux Cultural values, lifestyles, traditions
- Excellent attendance and punctuality are a must.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and a positive working relationship with community and staff.
- Must comply with the Lower Sioux Indian Community drug and alcohol policy.
- Interest in and commitment to American Indian/Alaska Native health.
- Native Preference applies.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. (or more if necessary for specific client assignment) and tolerate periods of repeated bending, stooping, etc. as necessary to meet the needs of individual clients.
